Signed and dated GEORGE BARBIER, 1911.

One of the leading lights to emerge during the Orientalist period, Barbier belonged to a new wave of commercial artists: a dandified, flamboyant coterie – the ‘Knights of the Bracelet’ – counting George Lepape, Paul Iribe, Charles Martin and Bernard Boutet de Monvel (Barbier’s first cousin) amongst its numbers. Barbier’s illustrations executed during this pre-war period demonstrate a clear move away from the richly ornamented, figurative style of the previous era. Bridging both the aesthetic movements of Art Nouveau and Art Deco, Barbier distilled and economised line and form to create evermore stylised but always elegant tableaux.
